The Greyhound Inn takes its name from the crest of the Wylderbore Smith family and was the meeting place of the court lees and the scene of tenants lunches during the "progresse" of the officials of Winchester College. Sydling St Nicholas being mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086 under the name of Sydleling was later owned during the middle ages to Milton Abbey, but after the dissolution of the monasteries it was passed to Winchester College who, until recently, still owned about twenty acres in the valley.
